The Bachelor of Philosophy (BPhil) undergraduate degree programme is a higher under graduate degree for students with a demonstrable background in research in a specialist field. It can be undertaken in any area of Music, Fine Arts or Education. The course is intended bridge the gap between undergraduate and postgraduate levels to prepare students for independent study at higher levels. The programme is comprised of a research programme completed under supervision of either a single 36,000 word thesis or six individual essays on related themes of 6,000 words. There are no individual classes or additional activities.
Those with higher bachelor’s degrees containing a demonstrable element of written work may apply directly to the Master of Research course if they prefer.
Key features of the course
Students graduating from this course will be able to:
1.Use well-developed judgement and knowledge to analyse, critically evaluate and interpret advanced theoretical and technical knowledge, and research methods, in an identified discipline area.
2.Develop a project plan based on a well-developed understanding of, and reflection on, existing discipline knowledge and ideas and in the context of methodological limitations, privacy issues and the ethical conduct of research.
3.With creativity and initiative, plan a project using theoretical and technical knowledge and research methods applicable to the identified discipline area.
4.With autonomy, adaptability and responsibility as a learner, analyse, generate and communicate solutions to complex problems through the design and implementation of a project plan.
5.Communicate advanced knowledge, expert skills and ideas to a range of audiences through application of advanced cognitive, technical and language (oral and written) communication skills and careful selection of appropriate media.
As an American-validated research degree at undergraduate level, this award prepares you to study further and would normally lead to a place on a research degree such as the Master of Philosophy.
Entry requirements
Students for this qualification must already hold either a Bachelors degree in an appropriate subject or an equivalent diploma of at least 120 credit hours equivalent
Students at should have a strong knowledge of their chosen area to graduate level before commencing study alongside the required pre-requisite qualifications. .
How much time do I need?
- Most of our students study part time, completing 60 credits a year.
- This will usually mean studying for 6-12 hours a week.
