Jeffrey Tillett (born 1927) was linked to Victoria College of Music for over 60 years and was a formative influence on generations of performers across numerous countries. Initially local secretary for his home town of Derby, he became Vice Principal and Director of Examinations in 1960, leading it  from the brink of closure to become a successful international institution. He remained in post until his death in 2008. The continued development of the College today, building on its long heritage can only be attributed to the dedication and skill of his decades of guidance.

A committed local politician, he served as Councillor and mayor of Derby, was involved with countless charities in the region and championed the rights of individual liberty throughout his professional career in education alongside his civic work.

A writer and composer as well as teacher at various levels, he held a London BA, numerous other awards and was later awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters from University of Derby. This he considered the highest of all the accolades he received in his long life. He also enjoyed a long career as a musician in the Roman Catholic Church.

Jeffrey’s memory is perpetuated at Victoria College through the School of Education being named for him and the scholarships his memorial bursary helps to those in need of financial support in their studies.
