Available to professional musicians and holders of an existing diploma in Music, the BMus by Top-Up allows experienced musicians to gain a Bachelors degree through APEL. Candidates undertake either a 30,000 word dissertation or negotiated music tutorial module.

As an American-validated degree at undergraduate level, this award prepares you to study further and would normally lead to a place on either a taught Master of Music degree or a research degree such as the Master of Philosophy.

Entry requirements

Students for this qualification must already hold either a Licentiate diploma, university certificate in an appropriate subject or demonstrate certifiable APEL of at least 120 credit hours equivalent

Students must have a knowledge of musical theory equivalent to graduate level before commencing study alongside the required pre-requisite qualifications. Students would also usually be expected to be either performers, teachers or composers of professional standard as well in order to demonstrate a practical application of the skills they will develop.

How much time do I need?

  • Most of our students study part time, completing 60 credits a year.
  • This will usually mean studying for 6-12 hours a week.
